Compress PNG

The PNG format was created to replace the legacy GIF format. The main feature of PNG is that it supports transparency. But there is also a significant drawback - the large size of graphic files. Knowing the fact that large image file sizes negatively affect the long loading of website pages, png needs to be compressed. Services remove unnecessary metadata from files, and also reduce the number of colors (combine similar ones into one), it is visually difficult to notice the difference, i.e. the quality does not deteriorate. PNG format assumes no loss in quality when saving images (yes, it allows you to have a full color image with translucency without loss of quality). But to maintain this advantage, it is not necessary to lose in size. In some cases - for example, gradient or low-color images - PNG is the most advantageous format in terms of size.

The main distinguishing feature of the PNG format is lossless data compression: depending on the compressor (compression program), you can reduce the weight of the image to a certain extent. Unlike the JPG format, the compression ratio of PNG files is not adjustable and depends entirely on the preset algorithms of the program with which the picture is saved. PNG format assumes no loss of quality when saving images. But in some cases, saving with distortion (Dithering or posterization) allows you to get images that are almost the same as the original, but at a significantly smaller size. Choosing the right palette (for example, using only grayscale or only 256 colors) - if not already done - can also significantly reduce the size of the image (each pixel is encoded with 1 byte instead of 3).
