What is M4A

M4A files are close to .MP4 video files because both file types use the MPEG-4 container format. But M4A files only contain audio data. The use of the .m4a extension has increased due to the confusion of MPEG-4 video files with MPEG-4 audio files. The iTunes Store provides songs in M4A format. Song data is encrypted using AAC compression, which greatly reduces file size. Songs containing copy protection have the .M4P extension. An M4A file is an audio file in MPEG-4 media container format. The file contains an audio stream encoded using the Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) or Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) codec. The M4A format provides good compression with high sound quality and is widely used by Apple to distribute music through the iTunes Store.

How M4A compression works

The M4A (MPEG-4 Audio) extension is used for compressed audio files created in MP4 or MPEG-4. However, unlike them, M4A only contains audio data. In Apple's QuickTime, these documents can be applied to Apple products such as iPod multimedia software or iTunes. The higher the compression ratio, the smaller the file size than the regular MP3 format. In addition, the playback quality is higher. Although this format is primarily intended for devices in the Apple ecosystem, it can also be found on Windows. Essentially music recorded in an MPEG-4 container, such an audio file opens up beautifully in a variety of multimedia players.
