Data transfer and storage costs a certain amount of money. The more information one has to deal with, the more expensive it is to store and transfer it. Often, data is stored in the simplest form, for example, in the ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) text editor, in binary executable on a computer, in separate files received from data collection systems, etc. ... Existing data compression algorithms can be divided into two large classes - lossy and lossless. Lossy algorithms are commonly used to compress images and audio. These algorithms allow high compression ratios to be achieved due to selective loss of quality. However, by definition, it is impossible to recover the original data from the compressed result.

First of all, no compression method can compress any data, since the encoding must be unambiguous. The task is to construct an encoding rule according to which the most frequently occurring messages would correspond to messages of a shorter length. Therefore, any compression method must be based on some assumptions about the probabilistic structure of the data being compressed. For example, for text in a particular language, letter frequencies are known. The purpose of data compression is to provide a compact representation of the data generated by the source for more economical storage and transmission over communication channels. Compressing information is one of the ways to encode it.
